The students will perform their Dance routines from last Thursday, namely Contemporary, Hip Hop, Cheerleading and a War Cry. A huge congratulations to Sullivan who has been crowned the Year 6 Champion speller, after correctly spelling 25 difficult words and a tie break of another 7. Well done! Good luck now for the big challenge against Mr Campbell and 2 of the teaching staff. We had a good class result of a 92% average for the Spellathon based on 4 different Spelling lists, including extension lists. All that is left is to collect the money for your efforts.

Students of Orange 6 had a very successful day at the end of Term 1 with their Survival Day based on the book, “Hatchet” by Gary Paulsen. I had been reading the book to the class during Term 1with the children demanding to hear the end of the book in the final stages. It is a book which is the first in a series and is based on many real life experiences by the author. He is a Canadian author who has even participated in the Iditarod dog sled race 3 times! I am presently reading the sequel to the class – “Hatchet, The Return”. It was a great team effort by everyone on the day in the making of shelters and other items associated with the book. One of the best comments came from one of the boys at the start of the day… “Mrs Bourke, these are the days that we will remember!” It doesn’t get better than that!

The students were asked to write a description of their favourite place. Below are some samples:-
The smile on his face was like the rough sea calming down to a silent ripple of water. (Cassie)
The shafts of light shimmer through the canopy like a beam of light piercing through darkness as a jagged sword does to its victim. (B)
Serenity fills the home with a happy, safe feeling like a spirit here to stay. (Alex)
The patches of plants protruding out of the ground almost seem to be calling me to help them to grow. (Giselle)
…the kissing sound of the coffee machine as the steam is being blasted into the milk jug and also the sound of chattering customers reminding me of school gatherings. (Sullivan)
The frangipanis sway to the tropical songs sung by the Hula dancers practising for the Full House concert tonight. (Mikayla)

Our excursion to the Sir Thomas Brisbane Planetarium was an enjoyable experience. The students were placed into groups with a teacher or parent. Thank you to the parents from Orange 7 who attended and helped out. It was most appreciated. We sketched part of the grounds before entering the Skydome, then answered questions on different aspects of Space in the Foyer and the Gallery. After this, we were shown the night sky and given information about the galaxies amongst many other interesting facts.
A big thank you to Mrs Mastro for her great organisation!
